BOPP / OPP Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene
BOPP / OPP Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene
BOPP or OPP is short for " Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene ".
This is a fancy way of saying polypropylene which is oriented ( stretched ) in two directions - the MD machine ( long ) direction and the TD transverse
( cross ) direction. This is achieved by what is known as a tenter frame. Once stretched to the desired thickness, the film is goes through a cooling process making it set so it is no longer able to stretch.

BOPP is a versatile workhorse. We stock what is called " coex prop" or polypropylene film with a very thin layer of polyethylene resin on the outside for sealability. The other layer melts at a lower temperature than inner polypropylene for fast seal initiation while not sticking to the bare metal seal jaws.
Our Coex BOPP is has the LDPE layer on both sides of the film, it can be sealed either as a fin or overlap seal.
OPP film provides an excellent water vapor barrier. Click here for data sheet.
We stock many thicknesses, or " gauges " of clear OPP to accommodate the weight of the package, gain in yield or improved WTVR. Some customers prefer the heavier "feel" and opt for a heavier gauge. Stock gauges are .70 mil, .80, 1.0, 1.2, 1.4, 1.6 and 2.0 mil ( a mil is 1 /1000 of an inch. ( To convert to metric, the conversion factor is 25.4 microns per mil. )
All BOPP film is 2 side heat sealable unless otherwise requested.
